2016 Chevrolet Volt LT Hatchback Details

Model Overview

At the heart of the Volt are two electric motors that power the front wheels. They combine to make 149 horsepower, sending power to the wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT.) In addition, the Volt also has a 1.5L 4-cylinder gasoline engine making 101 horsepower. This engine is mainly used to simply charge the batteries, but if need be, power can be sent directly to the front wheels as well. Unlike the previous generation Volt, the new gasoline engine does not require premium fuel. While nobody would accuse the Volt of being fast, it does get out of its own way, with 60 mph coming in a reasonable 8.4 seconds.
The Volt comes in two trim levels LT and Premier, with both trims having just a whiff of luxury car feel to them. The base LT trim comes with automatic climate control, power windows, an 8-inch color touch screen, OnStar with built in Wi-Fi hotspot technology, SiriusXM satellite radio, 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, taillights and daytime running lights and remote keyless entry. The Volt also features a clever smartphone projection system that uses the 8-inch screen in the dashboard to navigate various phone functions. Voice commands are also integrated into the system.

The Premier trim adds leather seating to the mix but also comes with a Bose premium sound system, heated and powered folding outside mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, a parking assistance program and unique 17-inch wheels.

Two packages are also available on the Premium trim, the Driver Confidence Package and the Driver Confidence II Package. The Driver Confidence Package looks out behind the Volt, with a rear cross traffic alert system and a blind spot warning and lane change warning system. The Driver Confidence II Package adds to the Driver Confidence package with a forward collision alert system, a lane keep assist system, low speed automatic braking and intelligent headlights.

All versions of the Volt come with traction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, a rearview camera and OnStar's various suite of diagnostic and assistance programs.

The Chevrolet Volt has been completely redesigned for 2016, now entering its second generation. The body is more sculpted and muscular, while the interior is more comfortable and feels roomier. The drivetrain has also seen a major overhaul with a new dual motor system that helps save weight and increase efficiency. Even the battery placement has changed, with the battery pack being placed lower and further back in the vehicle to improve weight distribution and stability.

Model Value

The Chevrolet Volt starts at around $33,000 and competes in the mid-sized sedan segment, however it's somewhat unique status as a plug-in hybrid sets itself apart from much of the market. With over 50 miles of electric range, it's likely that most owners will get around purely on electric power most of the time they're driving the Volt. However, range anxiety should be non-existent as the Volt does have a gasoline engine available to recharge the batteries when needed. Chevrolet estimates a total range of about 420 miles if the Volt is not recharged via an external source.
